Management of Prolonged Pediatric Fever in the Emergency Department

Fever is one of the most common reasons for pediatric ED visits, driving billions of dollars in U.S. healthcare costs each year.​ Most children have self-resolving infectious illnesses — but a prolonged course can signal far more serious disease.​ This lecture builds a framework for the initial ED evaluation and management of pediatric prolonged fever.

Objectives:

 - Define Fever, prolonged fever, and Fever of Unknown Origins (FUO).
- Review the most common causes of prolonged fever in children.  
- Highlight history and exam features that help create a strategy for evaluating children with these symptoms.
- Discuss common pitfalls to avoid when evaluating a child with prolonged fever.
