Class Information

The focus of this class is to gain insight on caring for the patient with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Challenges in perception of these patients as well as techniques for bedside care of these patients will be explored. Strategies that prevent non-caring as well as self-care tools to promote healthy coping for nurses and health care providers will be discussed.  

 

Objectives:

  • Review of the diagnostic criteria as well as evaluation of severity for ASD
  • Discuss research studies the genetic component of ASD
  • Identify nursing strategies to optimize care for these patients
  • Explore coping mechanisms and self-care strategies aimed to relieve burden and stress
