Normal Postpartum Care and Common Complications
Speaker: Tekoa King CNM, MPH
Upon completion of this program the participant will be able to:
- Review the normal physiologic changes that occur postpartum and corresponding physical symptoms
- Discuss best-practices for nursing care in the immediate postpartum period
- Review signs, symptoms and management of common postpartum complications such as urinary retention, pain, and endometritis
Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH)
Speaker: Valerie Huwe RNC-OB, MS, CNS
Upon completion of this program the participant will be able to:
- Briefly review physiologic changes of pregnancy that affect the pathophysiology of maternal hemorrhage
- Examine selected case presentations including lab values
- Explore the various treatment options for women with PPH including medications
- Incorporate a multidisciplinary plan of care to optimize care for women with PPH
Postpartum Emergencies: Eclampsia, Pulmonary & Amniotic Embolus & Cardiovascular Collapse

- Highlight abnormal conditions that contribute to the severity of postpartum emergencies
- Describe the immediate nursing interventions for women with: eclampsia, pulmonary embolism,
- amniotic fluid embolism, and cardiovascular collapse
- Incorporate a multidisciplinary plan of care to optimize care for women with postpartum emergencies
