Class Information
This interprofessional course is designed for nurses and respiratory therapists involved in the care of critically ill infants and children who may require advanced airway management. The course provides a comprehensive overview of pediatric intubation, emphasizing team-based preparation, role clarity, patient safety, and evidence-based practice. Through a combination of didactic content, case-based discussion, and skills-focused learning, participants will strengthen their understanding of pediatric airway anatomy, indications for intubation, equipment selection, and post-intubation management. The course highlights effective communication and collaboration between disciplines to optimize outcomes during high-risk airway events.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe key anatomical and physiological differences between pediatric and adult airways that impact intubation.
- Identify appropriate indications, equipment, and medication considerations for pediatric intubation across age groups.
- Demonstrate effective interprofessional communication and role coordination before, during, and after pediatric intubation.
- Recognize and respond to common complications associated with pediatric intubation and post-intubation care.
