Class Information
This two-hour course provides nurses and respiratory therapists with a comprehensive understanding of the principles, clinical applications, and collaborative practices involved in the use of Heated High Flow Nasal Cannula (HHFNC) therapy in pediatric patients. With an emphasis on interprofessional teamwork, participants will explore the physiologic rationale behind HHFNC, equipment setup and troubleshooting, patient assessment and monitoring, and evidence-based strategies for escalation and weaning of therapy. Learners will strengthen their ability to provide safe, effective, and coordinated care for pediatric patients requiring respiratory support. This session promotes shared decision-making and communication between nursing and respiratory care disciplines to improve patient outcomes and enhance bedside practice.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe the indications for applying oxygen therapy and understand the appropriate form of oxygen therapy for a pediatric patient
- Describe the different types of oxygen therapy used
- Troubleshoot common concerns with oxygen therapy using clinical cases
- Safely manage a pediatric patient on heated high flow therapy
