Class Information

Family-Centered Care (FCC) is a healthcare approach that recognizes patients and families as partners in care. It is built on the principles of respect, communication, collaboration, and shared decision-making.

In the Emergency Department and inpatient units, patients and families often experience fear, stress, and uncertainty. Engaging families as part of the care team helps improve communication, enhances patient safety, builds trust, and supports better outcomes.

Objectives:

  • Define patient- and family-centered care and its four core concepts.
  • Explain the evidence linking family-centered care to safety, experience, and outcomes.
  • Facilitate family presence during procedures and resuscitation using best practices.
  • Apply trauma-informed, culturally humble communication with diverse families.
  • Identify barriers and concrete strategies to sustain family-centered care on your unit.
