Approach to a Child with Toxic Ingestions

Class Information

Children are at risk for toxic ingestions, particularly if they are: one to four years of age, have a history of substance use disorder (SUD), and/or previous history of poisoning. This lecture explores the initial evaluation and stabilization of a toxic ingestion. It will also provide a succinct overview of managing specific common and/or fatal ingestions.


Objectives:

  • Identify “at risk” populations for toxic ingestions
  • Discuss the physical exam findings for common pediatric ingestions
  • Highlight management of specific common or fatal pediatric ingestions of all ages.
